How WWE Should Avoid Having Another Part-Time Champion In Roman Reigns

Roman Reigns has been the undisputed WWE Universal Champion ever since WrestleMania 38, but to the dismay of many WWE fans, his reign has seen him transition to more of a part-time schedule. Even if there is nothing that can be done about the months that have passed in this regard, WWE may still resolve the problem. There is no question that having a permanent champion would be advantageous for both weekly TV and PPVs, but how precisely can WWE do that in a way that is advantageous to all parties? WWE can easily do that if they take care, thought, and originality.

WWE Wants Two World Champions Ahead Of WrestleMania 39

WWE started relying heavily on part-time performers in the 2010s since it was difficult to develop new top stars because of the concern that they would outgrow the organisation, much like The Rock did. When it came to the major shows, stars like Brock Lesnar, The Undertaker, Triple H, and Goldberg started to dominate, taking the top places away from individuals who toil week in and week out for the promotion. Even title reigns were featured in this, with people like Goldberg winning the Universal Championship twice, Triple H winning the WWE Title while being a leader, and Lesnar winning numerous belts while going months between appearances.

It can be great when a part-time star makes an appearance, as Roman Reigns has to some extent, but with only one world champion on each of Raw and SmackDown between the shows, him not being there every week, and the fact that he is no longer appearing on every PPV, it has been a detraction. It has made concerts and everyone else on the roster feel less special, rather than giving the World Title and champion a sense of increased specialness. According to the WrestleVotes Twitter account, WWE wants to have two world champions before WrestleMania season, but doesn’t want Reigns to lose, therefore they must take action to get there.

WWE Would Need To Ensure That A Roman Reigns Loss Isn’t Predictable

Although there are currently very few possibilities for WWE’s ideal condition to materialise in terms of fantasy booking, there is undoubtedly a method to do so. To prolong his record-breaking title reign and crown someone else as WWE Champion, it would need to be a situation in which Reigns retains one of his global championships, preferably the Universal Championship. One fall would be for one championship, and the next would be for the other, as was done at WrestleMania 16 when the European and Intercontinental Titles were both on the line in a triple threat match. However, if WWE scheduled a bout with this requirement, it would be immediately obvious that Reigns is giving up one of his belts, eliminating all element of surprise from the proceedings. There is, however, a workaround for this. Before a PPV, like Survivor Series, Reigns might face two rivals in a triple threat match, such, say, Matt Riddle and Seth Rollins.
