According to historians, he is from Gilan, Iraq. He was given the last name Gilani for a reason.

He received help from Gilan for his early studies. He then travelled to Baghdad to study Hanbali jurisprudence there under the tutelage of Hazrats Abu Saeed Mubarak Makhzoomi and Ibn Aqil. He attended lessons on hadith given by Hazrat Abu Muhammad Ja’far al-Sarraj. Hazrat Abu’l-Khair Hammad ibn Muslim al-Dabbas (Allah’s Blessings Be Upon Him) served as his spiritual guide. He advocated for Islam’s goals and tenets, and a sizeable portion of Christians and Jews supported him. He taught his children Hadith, Tafsir, and the qualities of the Qur’an Majeed.
